David Cameron backs ‘living and working countryside’ at CLA Game Fair Opposition leader David Cameron MP visited The CLA Game Fair today (25 July 2008) - and pledged his backing for a "living and working" countryside.
Mr Cameron was escorted round the showground at Blenheim, Oxfordshire, by CLA President Henry Aubrey-Fletcher and CLA Deputy President William Worsley. He also met CLA Vice-President Harry Cotterell.
Mr Cameron said: "What we want is a living and working countryside. The CLA Game Fair has lots of examples of the things which are great about the countryside in all its wonderful diversity.
"The CLA Game Fair is bigger and better than ever – it's a good day out. I am delighted it is taking place in my constituency of West Oxfordshire."
Mr Cameron visited the CLA's locally sourced food Just Ask stand – and met the campaign organiser Dr Charles Trotman, and also Alexia Robinson, to whom he presented an Outstanding Contribution to the British Food Industry for her work on British Food Fortnight promoting locally sourced food.
Clearly delighted by what he saw and heard on the Just Ask stand, Mr Cameron said he "absolutely" supported the buying of British food in Britain.
"Does the French army buy German food?" he asked. "The reason we know our Government is so bad at procurement [of British food] is that we have done the research on it. The figures show just how bad they are at it. We believe public procurement of British food is very important."
He also met representatives of The Children's Trust – The CLA Game Fair official charity which provides care, education and therapy for children with multiple disabilities. He chatted to James Topping, whom the Trust has helped to recover from an horrific car accident.
Mr Cameron also visited the Active Countryside area and met Robert Sears, the CLA member responsible for the attraction. He was also introduced to the British Olympic Shooting Team by its performance director John Leighton Dyson.
Mr Cameron's visit to The CLA Game Fair created quite a buzz – with crowds gathering as he walked around, children asking for autographs, and visitors and traders enthusiastically shaking him by the hand.
He chatted warmly with stallholders and bought a variety of locally sourced foods which he said he was taking home for "Mrs Cameron".
