CLA pledges to rollout the last mile of Broadband

CLA pledges to rollout the last mile of Broadband "The announcement we have been waiting for" is how CLA's Rural Economy Adviser, Dr Charles Trotman, described the decision by BT to systematically rollout ADSL broadband to a further 1,128 exchanges by no later than summer 2005. This will help bring broadband to exchanges serving 99.6 per cent of UK homes and businesses. However, says the CLA, the job is not yet finished. The CLA estimates that 13% of its members, who are by their very nature predominantly rural, will not be able to receive BT's ADSL broadband as they live or work too far from their local exchange.

The CLA has pledged to continue its work with BT to help complete rollout. After two years of discussions, culminating with a meeting last week with BT in London, the CLA has announced a three-fold strategy:

1. The CLA will support BT in its efforts to extend the reach of broadband from each exchange. If this could be extended from 5.5Km to 10Km the CLA believes that this would effectively provide everyone with ADSL, and it also believes that this is achievable using existing technology;

2. CLA Regional Directors will be meeting with their BT counterparts to agree how best to work together to further speed up rollout in rural areas, using CLA lines of communication to its members and partners;

3. The CLA will continue its campaign to urge people to register their interest with BT. This will enable the broadband providers to prioritise demand and rollout more efficiently.

'The final task', says Dr Trotman, 'is to get people to use broadband'. He explains: "We understand that in urban areas only 9% of the population is using broadband where it is available. We believe that in rural areas this demand could be as high as 30%. Broadband offers well documented advantages for rural areas. Of the people who have connected via broadband, not a single one has given it up".
