Animal Welfare Bill: Government states commitment to determine welfare of game birds “on the basis of scientific evidence” A statement that the welfare of game birds housed in raised laying units should be determined on the basis of scientific evidence has been welcomed by groups representing those in the game farming industry.
The Country Land and Business Association (CLA), The Game Conservancy Trust (GCT), The National Gamekeepers Organisation (NGO) and The Game Farmers Association (GFA) lobbied members of the House of Lords during the committee stage of the Animal Welfare Bill (24 May) to ensure that an amendment by the Liberal Democrat Environment spokesperson Baroness Miller of Chilthorne Dormer to ban laying units was withdrawn. David Fursdon, CLA President said: "It is unfortunate this somewhat misconceived amendment got as far as it did. The Government had already confirmed that that the welfare of game birds should be addressed on the basis of properly conducted scientific research. "This is, surely, the only sensible way to proceed. We must ensure that worthwhile activities are not banned unless there are good reasons for doing so and, that any decisions are made on the basis of the the best available evidence. That is why we so strongly recommended that DEFRA adopt the GFA's voluntary code on game rearing reinforcing it with information obtained from a proper study on game bird welfare carried out by a reputable organisation such as the GCT or the Farm Animal Welfare Council." |
