BTV Vaccination: The Only Viable Option – Says CLA

BTV Vaccination: The Only Viable Option – Says CLA "Defra has taken a positive step towards a long-term solution for containing and controlling Bluetongue disease", said CLA Animal Health and Welfare Adviser, Richella Logan, in response to the news today (Thursday 1 November) that Defra will be opening tenders for a Bluetongue vaccination.

Richella Logan continued: "Vaccination is the only viable option for controlling this disease and is something we have been pressing for from the outset. It is vital that we move swiftly and decisively if we are to have any hope of stopping this disease from spreading as quickly as it has on the continent.

"Bringing this disease under control is an essential part of ensuring that the UK livestock sector – essential to the management of some of our most fragile landscapes - can regain an economically sound footing," concluded Ms Logan.

Defra have said that although no suitable vaccine is currently available for the strain of Bluetongue circulating in England, several companies have vaccines in development which are expected to be available from next summer. Defra is now inviting tenders for between 10 and 20 million doses subject to an assessment of the anticipated demand.

The CLA is currently in high level talks with government and other industry leaders to ensure that an effective, practical and cost effective vaccination strategy is put in place as quickly as possible.
