CLA welcomes science-based pesticide decision

CLA welcomes science-based pesticide decision A disaster for arable farmers and land managers has been avoided by the Government's decision not to introduce 'no spray buffer zones' around residential areas. After lobbying by the Country Land & Business Association (CLA) and others, Rt Hon Alun Michael MP, Minister of State for Rural Affairs confirmed that the Government would not be introducing 'no spray zones' as the existing system (1) provides adequate safeguards to protect the public.

'Our members are relieved that this proposal, which had no scientific justification, has been rejected. Imposing buffer zones would have been an act of legislative vandalism and we welcome the Government's sensible decision,' said Mark Hudson, CLA President.

The Government has decided that farmers and growers will need to keep records of pesticides sprayed on crops. In agreement with the CLA's recommendations, these records will be available to the public via a third party. A pilot study will explore practical means of notifying residents living next to farms of planned spraying. Both these measures are already within the bounds of good practice.

'We are pleased that, in this case, the Government has listened to scientific evidence and acknowledged the good practice already carried out by farmers. Schemes such as the Voluntary Initiative, formed after the rejection of the crippling pesticide tax proposal, are good examples of how, by working together, the industry can achieve positive environmental change without profit-sapping legislation,' added Mark Hudson.
