Statistics Hide the Reality of Farm Incomes – Say Rural Economy Experts

Most of the farming industry remains critically dependant on public money, a world away from the rather rosy picture painted by DEFRA with the publication of figures depicting a rise of nearly nine per cent in farm incomes – according to the CLA, the rural economy experts.

" The minister has said he is encouraged by figures that show the estimated total income from farming per full time person has risen to £13,349 – and we are certainly pleased that he has underlined his commitment to helping farmers drive up their economic performance. The facts behind the statistics remain that while the total income from farming is estimated at £2538 million – that actually includes £771 million of diversified activities and £2,960 million of support payments.

"The core business of farming lost £1193million last year – and although that was a small improvement on the previous year it is still a serious situation and a long way from the interpretation DEFRA has put on it."  The picture in the uplands is especially worrying.

CLA president, Henry Aubrey-Fletcher said that a sector by sector analysis revealed a catastrophic drop in incomes for livestock farmers in the uplands which fell by almost 50% during 2007 – a fact, he said, that posed a genuine threat to the future of some of the UK's most fragile landscapes.

The lesson to be drawn from the figures, according to the CLA, is that farmers do not receive anything like the full costs that are incurred producing food and stewarding the countryside to the animal welfare and environmental standards that the public demand.
