CLA support piloting of new entry level Agri-environment Scheme

CLA support piloting of new entry level Agri-environment Scheme 'A major development in farming and countryside policy' The CLA today welcomed DEFRA's announcement of pilot areas for a new entry level stewardship scheme to deliver more environmentally-friendly farming.

Oliver Harwood, CLA Head of Rural Economy said:

'This as a major development in both farming and countryside policy. The introduction of a new broad application agri-environment scheme was a key recommendation of the Curry Report and a principle that the CLA has been championing for some time. In an era when prices for farm produce are under increasing pressure, high standards of land management should be recognised and rewarded, and we are delighted that this has been adopted and taken forward so quickly.

'Farmers and land managers have a key role to play in providing an attractive and well managed countryside for everyone to enjoy. The conservation of wildlife, landscape, archaeology and natural resources can be achieved across all types of farmland, as many farmers and land managers have already proved. However change across large areas of the countryside is needed in some cases, particularly to reverse the decline in farmland birds. The entry level stewardship scheme will provide the tools to achieve this.

'To be workable, the new scheme must be attractive to participants, effective and run with the minimum of bureaucracy. We look forward to assisting DEFRA with the evaluation of the pilot phase and the continuing development of the scheme.'
