CLA says ‘jury still out’ on Benn’s decision on set aside

CLA says ‘jury still out’ on Benn’s decision on set aside

The CLA has cautiously welcomed Secretary of State for the Environment Hilary Benn's decision not to jump in with both feet on set aside replacement.

The Association says this will create a breathing space for Natural England and the Rural Payments Agency - working with land managers - time to work on a plan which can be practically delivered by 2009/2010.

Speaking at the 50th anniversary CLA Game Fair, CLA President Henry Aubrey-Fletcher said: "In the meantime I urge land managers who have retained set-aside to continue managing it for the benefit of the environment. This will give them the potential to move into environmental stewardship in the future.

"Land managers should continue to follow the five point plan set out within the higher level set aside group's interim report.

"I am very pleased that the Secretary of State has allowed enough time to devise a suitable replacement plan that will take in to account the challenge of food supply".
