Coastal access mapping ignores need to improve existing access, says CLA The CLA today (Friday, 31 July) said that an audit by Natural England which aims to map a round-England coastal path ignored the need to improve existing access. Natural England unveiled the audit today in line with proposals in the Marine and Coastal Access Bill.
CLA President Henry Aubrey-Fletcher said: "The CLA was interested to see how Natural England proposed mapping the entire English coastline. We have had serious reservations about the proposed path since the idea was first mooted, our main concerns being for private property owners and businesses who could be adversely affected.
"Today's audit has shown that the public already enjoys a right to access to two-thirds of the English coast. Furthermore, it is unfortunate the Natural England report has ignored the significant amount of access coastal landowners provide on a voluntary basis.
"As for the remaining coastline, there are often good reasons why public access is not possible, for instance the presence of military bases or ports or overriding nature conservation concerns."
The CLA President added: "In the CLA's view, it would have been better if the Government had instead done more to improve the quality of existing access, such as with the provision of car parks and toilets, rather than try to secure access to the entire English coastline.
"We will continue to engage with Natural England on the implementation of the coastal access proposals in the Marine and Coastal Access Bill, and are pleased the Government has accepted the need for landowners to have a right of appeal."
