Native Tree Policy Deserves "Support Not Gripes" Says CLA

Native Tree Policy Deserves The Country Land and Business Association (CLA) has hailed the Forestry Commission's new policy to restore native trees, such as oak, ash and beech, to our ancient woodlands as visionary. Speaking at the launch earlier today, Judith Webb, Forestry Adviser to the CLA and the Forestry and Timber Association said:

"Those who are griping about the public funding of this scheme have, frankly, got the wrong end of the stick. The public payments aren't for chopping down trees but are a contribution to the cost of replacing felled trees with native species and towards the costs of managing this transformation.

"Trees don't grow as quickly as policy changes and our understanding of habitats and our desires concerning woodlands have moved on since the Second World War. Hence, it is entirely right that there is public contribution to the enormous public benefits these woodlands provide in terms of biodiversity, a backdrop to rural tourism, leisure opportunities and cultural heritage.

"This is a visionary scheme and we hope that the Government will be realistic in supporting its aspirations, both in terms of financial support and in educating people about the value of restoring our native trees to ancient woodland."
