New labelling code of practice just the beginning, says CLA

New labelling code of practice just the beginning, says CLA

The CLA today (23 February 2010) welcomed the announcement by Hilary Benn, Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, of a new code of practice on country of origin labelling for pork and products containing pork.

The rural economy experts encouraged Defra and the food retail chain to adopt a code of practice which includes all primary food products.

CLA President William Worsley said: "This new code of practice is vital as it represents the beginning. It also reflects the role of local food campaigns, such as the CLA's "Just Ask" campaign, in raising the issue of country-of-origin labelling higher up the political agenda. Just Ask recognises the public's desire to know where the food on their plates comes from."

The CLA is calling on the Government, major retailers and food service providers, such as pubs and restaurants, to introduce country-of-origin labelling for all primary food products so that the public retains confidence in the food chain.

Mr Worsley added: "Putting in place a coherent and comprehensive country of origin food labelling system will show the UK is taking on board the wishes of the British public."
