The CLA says supermarket ombudsman offers a turning point for UK food producers

The CLA says supermarket ombudsman offers a turning point for UK food producers

The CLA said today (Thursday, 21 January) that Consumer Minister Kevin Brennan's announcement that the Government is to introduce an ombudsman to enforce the Groceries Supply Code of Practice is "long overdue".

The rural economy experts believe quick and effective implementation of the Code of Practice is crucial.

CLA President William Worsley said: "Creating an ombudsman to protect producers and suppliers from restrictive practices by large retailers has long been a major priority in the CLA's Food Chain Initiative. This success is a direct result of our lobbying on this issue.

"Large retailers can impose unrealistic conditions on their smaller suppliers. These suppliers are expected to carry a disproportionate share of the risks and costs, and many have found dealing with supermarkets particularly intimidating."

The CLA President added: "The industry is heavily dependent on the supermarket sector, but these trading conditions have caused great uncertainty for many producers.

"The news that Government is to implement the recommendations of the CLA and its industry supporters is to be welcomed, and could be a turning point for many smaller producers who are struggling to develop their markets.

"But this announcement is only the beginning; it is its implementation that will make the real difference. This watchdog must have teeth, but it must also be willing to use them and be allowed to do so."
