Government still ignoring rural proofing, says CLA An Environment, Food and Rural Affairs report released today recognises a main concern from the CLA that government departments are still not rural proofing policies. The CLA believes that the time has come for there to be a dedicated Cabinet Committee that ensures that the views of rural areas are recognised by Government departments and implemented.
CLA President Henry Aubrey-Fletcher said: "We remain seriously concerned that the potential of the rural economy is not being exploited. All who work in the rural community understand that there appears to be a systematic failure on the part of government bodies to support rural business.
"Given the current economic climate, it's vital rural businesses are underpinned with innovative projects. This is especially the case when it comes to broadband speed and access which can mean the difference between success and failure for a small rural business.
"Flexibility is the key. We need a more flexible planning system that encourages diverse projects; we need a governmental structure that rewards enterprise rather than wrapping it in regulation; and we need recognition by all that the work and activities that take place in rural areas is fundamental to the economic, social and environmental well being of this country."
