CLA fully behind push to help stretched rural businesses The CLA fully supports the introduction of legislation that would help rural businesses by allowing those entitled to business rate relief to be paid immediately. MP Peter Luff, who represents Mid Worcestershire, will be presenting the Small Business Rate Relief (Automatic Payment) Bill for its Second Reading today (Friday, 6 March).
CLA President Henry Aubrey-Fletcher said: "The CLA commends Peter Luff on the introduction of his Small Business Rate Relief Bill. If enacted, the Bill will be of significant help to rural businesses in these difficult times by allowing those who are entitled to rate relief to receive it automatically.
"Many rural businesses may be unaware of their eligibility for rate relief. Putting the onus on the billing authority is a good way to ensure those who receive the relief get it automatically. The CLA urges MPs to support this Bill."
Mr Luff said: "I am delighted to have the support of the CLA for my Bill. Small businesses are the lifeblood of so many rural communities and too many of them are missing on out on an important entitlement. My Bill would change that."
