CLA calls on government in Scotland and England to get together to avoid pay disruption for North farmers The CLA has warned of possible pay disruption for farmers in the North of England and Scottish Borders only a year after the disastrous financial impact of foot and mouth disease. Last year sheep farmers on both sides of the England/Scotland border suffered considerable financial hardship when the movement restrictions imposed to deal with foot and mouth disease dislocated the autumn sales, their annual payday.
This year it looks as if measures put in place to deal with another disease problem many miles to the south, bluetongue, will again cause farmers severe problems.
The CLA points out that agriculture is driven by geography and climate - not arbitrary political boundaries – and the grand round of the seasons takes no note of political decisions.
CLA president Henry Aubrey-Fletcher said: "The uncertainty posed by the inability of government administrations in Scotland and England to work together to produce a coherent and timetabled approach to bluetongue and vaccination issues has left many farmers in limbo, the price will be paid by farming families.
"The CLA is asking the English and the Scottish administrations to urgently review the situation on the ground in the borders, and to take steps to ensure that this year's autumn sales season can take place without major disruption."
