CLA supports Government’s continued commitment to fighting bTB

The CLA today (19 January) supported the Government's continued commitment to fighting bovine TB as Defra confirmed two pilot areas for badger control.

CLA President Harry Cotterell said: "We welcome the Government's evident determination to combat bovine TB using a package of measures including a badger cull, starting with invitations to farmers in West Gloucestershire and West Somerset to apply to run two pilots schemes in their areas.

"We are pleased the Government is making steady progress in tackling this appalling disease and will of course fully support the work being done by Defra, Natural England and the NFU to ensure these pilots are a success."

He added: "As Agriculture Minister Jim Paice said today, bovine TB is a devastating disease that is causing the slaughter of tens of thousands of cattle every year and will cost taxpayers £1billion over the next 10 years if not dealt with effectively."
