CLA delighted as flawed Gamebird Code is withdrawnThe CLA today (27 May) expressed relief as the new Government withdrew the flawed Code of Practice for the Rearing of Gamebirds. The Association, a member of the Defra Stakeholder Group that provided an agreed draft to the previous administration only to see it catastrophically changed, said the move was a victory for all those across the game industry who campaigned against the Code, and a welcome approach to consultation by the new Government. The CLA, Game Farmers' Association, Countryside Alliance, Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust, and the National Gamekeepers' Organisation all condemned changes made to the detail of the Code by the previous Government, which failed to take into account independent veterinary advice on welfare and recommendations from the specialist stakeholder group. All five organisations wrote jointly to the new Government on 14 May asking that the Code be withdrawn for reconsideration. This was agreed by new Defra Minister Jim Paice who has reconvened the working group. CLA President and Yorkshire landowner William Worsley said: "We pledged to fight on behalf of our members against the unworkable changes made to the Code and I am delighted the new Government has seen sense and listened to the expert advice that we and other specialist organisations gave. "It is vital to provide a code that underpins sustainable game rearing and we look forward to working with the new Defra team to achieve a new code which demonstrates this." |
