TASTY REWARD OFFERED IN SEARCH FOR HISTORIC PICS A tasty reward is being offered in return for help with tracking down pictorial evidence of Yorkshire's agricultural heritage.
Celebrating its 100th anniversary, the Country Land and Business Association (CLA) is offering a free meal for two at next year's Yorkshire Show to whoever comes up with the best photograph of rural life in Yorkshire at the turn of the 20th century. CLA regional director, Dorothy Fairburn, said: "Next year will mark 100 years since the CLA was founded in Yorkshire and we are planning a host of events to celebrate this major milestone. "We are particularly keen to assemble a montage of photos that were taken around 1907 and we will give a free meal for two to however comes up with what we feel is the most interesting photo dating back to that period." It was in 1907 at the Station Hotel, York that the Yorkshire Land and Property Defence Association held its first meeting and began to lobby MPs on topical agricultural issues. The following year it joined forces with the newly established Central Land Association in London, creating an influential industry body that is today the Country Land and Business Association. Celebratory events scheduled for Yorkshire in 2007 include a special founders' party at The Royal York Hotel (formerly the Station Hotel), a summer garden party, joint activities with local schools and a number of special centenary competitions. A farmer’s daughter from the North York Moors, where her brothers still farm, Dorothy has clocked up more than 30 years’ service to the rural economy since graduating from Wye College (University of London) with a degree in agriculture. She qualified as a rural practice chartered surveyor (land agent) whilst working for Savills plc in London and York, dealing with sales and purchases of country houses and estates as well as the management of investment estates for financial institutions. Prior to joining the CLA, Dorothy worked for the National Trust in Yorkshire. There she managed some 30,000 acres of outstanding countryside as well as being responsible for historic houses open to the public and the acquisition of major new properties.
