Watch out for metal thieves, farmers warnedFarmers and landowners in West Yorkshire are being urged to be on their guard following a spate of metal thefts from farms in the area. The CLA is raising the alarm following the most recent incident which saw more than £2,000 worth of metal items including shafts, troughs, sheep hurdles and gates stolen from Glovershaw Farm at Eldwick near Bingley. And according to the farm owners, Louise and John Hobson, theirs is not the only one to have been targeted. Louise said: "The thieves spent time trying to dismantle our cattle handling system but thankfully didn't get away with it as we think they may have been disturbed. "Unfortunately, one of our neighbouring farms wasn't so lucky and had half of their cattle race stolen along with bale spikes, tools, a compressor and lots of other metal items worth over £6,000 in total." The Hobsons have now installed high-tech sensors to thwart any further attempts and are advising fellow farmers to do the same. CLA Yorkshire Regional Director Dorothy Fairburn said: "The price of metal has risen sharply this year and it now appears that thieves are turning their attention to farms as a source of supply. "We would urge all of our members to ensure they take sensible precautions, such as installing security lighting and cameras, and to report any sightings of suspicious vehicles in the neighbourhood to the police." |

A farmer’s daughter from the North York Moors, where her brothers still farm, Dorothy has clocked up more than 30 years’ service to the rural economy since graduating from Wye College (University of London) with a degree in agriculture. She qualified as a rural practice chartered surveyor (land agent) whilst working for Savills plc in London and York, dealing with sales and purchases of country houses and estates as well as the management of investment estates for financial institutions. Prior to joining the CLA, Dorothy worked for the National Trust in Yorkshire.
