CLA wins septic tank reviewThe CLA has successfully called for a review into the way septic tanks are registered by the Environment Agency (EA), gaining a major win on behalf of its members. The Association called for a review after receiving many complaints from members who were unsure about the new requirements to register septic tanks. The EA has now agreed that small domestic sewage systems, as used by thousands of homes in the region not connected to mains sewage, will not have to be registered during the review period although it will still accept applications. CLA President and Yorkshire landowner William Worsley said: "The Environment Agency has not properly communicated the new rules, leaving thousands of householders in the dark and worried about possible fines. If no discharge is allowed some would need to spend thousands of pounds on a new system. "We are delighted the Government has agreed a review and public consultation to try to address the serious concerns of CLA members and look forward to seeing full details about the scope of the review." Mr Worsley added: "We are keen to see measures that reduce red tape for rural householders and assistance to help meet the costs of any changes that the law will require. The CLA will continue to work closely with Defra and the Environment Agency to find a way forward for domestic sewage discharge." |

A farmer’s daughter from the North York Moors, where her brothers still farm, Dorothy has clocked up more than 30 years’ service to the rural economy since graduating from Wye College (University of London) with a degree in agriculture. She qualified as a rural practice chartered surveyor (land agent) whilst working for Savills plc in London and York, dealing with sales and purchases of country houses and estates as well as the management of investment estates for financial institutions. Prior to joining the CLA, Dorothy worked for the National Trust in Yorkshire. There she managed some 30,000 acres of outstanding countryside as well as being responsible for historic houses open to the public and the acquisition of major new properties.
