Funding wildlife must not put new burden on rural businesses, says CLAThe CLA today (Tuesday, 12 October) sounded a note of caution about RSPB proposals for new taxes to protect the environment.The Association said that the plans – in a report entitled Financing nature in an age of austerity – could put even greater pressure on rural businesses at an already-tough time. CLA President William Worsley said: "The report rightly recognises that currently there is not enough funding for conservation work. However, taxing farmers and land managers or putting a levy on new homes in the countryside is not the answer. "The economy of the countryside depends on rural businesses which can ill afford additional financial burdens, and the planning system is already too expensive without adding to its costs." Mr Worsley added: "The idea of conservation credits, which the RSPB raises again, undoubtedly has its merits. However, it needs to be conceived in a way that does not put a brake on much-needed rural housing or businesses." |

A farmer’s daughter from the North York Moors, where her brothers still farm, Dorothy has clocked up more than 30 years’ service to the rural economy since graduating from Wye College (University of London) with a degree in agriculture. She qualified as a rural practice chartered surveyor (land agent) whilst working for Savills plc in London and York, dealing with sales and purchases of country houses and estates as well as the management of investment estates for financial institutions. Prior to joining the CLA, Dorothy worked for the National Trust in Yorkshire. There she managed some 30,000 acres of outstanding countryside as well as being responsible for historic houses open to the public and the acquisition of major new properties.
