All we want for Christmas is a good broadband connection

Yorkshire farmers and landowners are putting a reliable broadband connection at the top of their Christmas and New Year wish list according to the CLA.

Official figures from Ofcom show that up to 20 percent of rural areas are still unable to receive an effective and affordable broadband connection while up to 35 percent have no access to superfast broadband at all.

In Yorkshire, a concerning 17 percent of broadband users have a download speed of less than two megabits per second (Mbps).

The CLA is now calling for Government funding to be spent on bringing rural Yorkshire's broadband not-spots up to speed rather than making the already fast even faster.

CLA Yorkshire Regional Director Dorothy Fairburn said: "The Government is investing millions in improving broadband delivery and progress is being made - but it is still not happening quickly enough in the more remote rural areas.

"The rural-urban digital divide is growing at an alarming rate and causing major problems for our members – particularly farmers and landowners with commercial properties who have lost tenants because they cannot offer superfast broadband. 

"Householders without a reliable connection are suffering too – they can't access key online facilities, such as tax returns and bill payments, and their children are being disadvantaged by not being able use the internet for their homework."

The CLA is calling for a universal service commitment of at least 5Mbps and is asking rural residents in Yorkshire to add their names to its online petition at: www.cla.org.uk/Policy_Work/Petitions/

Dorothy Fairburn
Regional Director

A farmer’s daughter from the North York Moors, where her brothers still farm, Dorothy has clocked up more than 30 years’ service to the rural economy since graduating from Wye College (University of London) with a degree in agriculture.

She qualified as a rural practice chartered surveyor (land agent) whilst working for Savills plc in London and York, dealing with sales and purchases of country houses and estates as well as the management of investment estates for financial institutions.

Prior to joining the CLA, Dorothy worked for the National Trust in Yorkshire. There she managed some 30,000 acres of outstanding countryside as well as being responsible for historic houses open to the public and the acquisition of major new properties.

Dorothy was awarded an MBE in the 2011 New Year Honours List in recognition of her services to rural affairs.
