CLA calls for more details of Ministers’ ‘encouraging’ broadband pledgeThe CLA today (8 June 2010) welcomed a commitment by the Environment and Culture Secretaries of State to provide broadband in the countryside but called for details of exactly how they plan to bridge the digital divide between urban and rural areas. The Association said it was "greatly encouraged" by the three trial rural broadband projects announced by Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt and the supportive statement made by Defra Secretary of State Caroline Spelman, who said: "Broadband access for rural communities is essential if we are going to provide the means for their economies and businesses to grow and to minimise the social digital divide for people living in rural areas." CLA President William Worsley said: "This is undoubtedly a big step in the right direction for rural broadband, and we look forward to receiving more information on how and where the three rural broadband projects announced by Mr Hunt will be carried out. "We are greatly encouraged by the Ministers publicly committing themselves to a universal service commitment of two megabits a second by 2012 and by Mr Hunt's admission that it is a 'scandal' that nearly three million households in Britain cannot access this broadband speed and only one percent of the country has access to fibre optic-delivered broadband." The CLA President added that the Government's increasing provision of online services made it particularly important to close the digital divide. He added: "Rural businesses will only survive and thrive if this Government wastes no time in putting its good intentions on rural broadband into practice." |
