ANGLERS BACK CALL TO BLOCK RIGHT TO ROW PROPOSALS Organisations representing three million anglers across the UK are backing the Country Land and Business Association (CLA) in its bid to block controversial new 'right to row' proposals. Speaking on the day before the second reading of a Private Member's Bill calling for a statutory right of navigation for non motorised craft on all rivers in England and Wales, regional director of the CLA in Yorkshire, Dorothy Fairburn, said: "Voluntary access to rivers is the only answer to successful, usable access across the country - and the fishing organisations who represent Britain's three million anglers agree with us, as does the Government. "This proposed legislation will wipe away the rights of riparian owners, of landowners and access rights and fishing rights that have been there for generations. "As recommended by the Environment Agency in October 2006, partnerships between local people, landowners and organisations will achieve the kind of access that everyone wants and needs. "Many different interests have to be considered if rivers can be used for the social and economic well-being of all. We want to encourage everyone to get out and enjoy the countryside, but obviously, the rights of riparian owners have also to be considered. The way forward is through voluntary negotiation and not more legislation." |

A farmer’s daughter from the North York Moors, where her brothers still farm, Dorothy has clocked up more than 30 years’ service to the rural economy since graduating from Wye College (University of London) with a degree in agriculture. She qualified as a rural practice chartered surveyor (land agent) whilst working for Savills plc in London and York, dealing with sales and purchases of country houses and estates as well as the management of investment estates for financial institutions. Prior to joining the CLA, Dorothy worked for the National Trust in Yorkshire. There she managed some 30,000 acres of outstanding countryside as well as being responsible for historic houses open to the public and the acquisition of major new properties. Solicitors Indemnity Fund . Solicitors in the CLA Legal Team are not covered by the Solicitors Indemnity Fund in relation to professional negligence in relation to any advice given by them.
