Message from Gloucestershire Branch Chairman

Message from Gloucestershire Branch Chairman

If we want the countryside and its communities to grow and develop, we must encourage good projects, not hinder them - we must not allow the countryside to stagnate.

That's the message for 2012 from the chairman of the Gloucestershire branch of the CLA, John Gunnery, who says that changes to the planning laws and the whole localism agenda could an offer an opportunity to breathe new life into the rural economy.

"The CLA is a membership organisation, and thrives from member participation – I would like next year to be a year when our members ask themselves what they can do for the CLA rather than just ask what the CLA can do for them.

"But the CLA will be doing a great deal to help its members over the next year.  Top of the list is CAP Reform, which will eventually have far reaching effects on the whole countryside.  The CLA is doing its best to influence the outcome, but with 27 countries all competing it is very difficult for the UK Government to win all their points – there are bound to be some anomalies.

Other matters that the CLA will be working on for your benefit are the Severn Estuary Flood Defences, reviving revisions to the Animal Act, Broadband, Localism and Planning, and generally protecting your Property Rights.

"Please tell us about whether you have enjoyed or benefited from the social and technical events that we have organised.  We need your input.

"The Police will need your help if the Badger cull goes ahead.  The duty of the Police is to uphold the law, and any information given to them to help them perform their duty will be much appreciated.

The CLA run a very competitive Insurance Service.  Try them. Participation in the scheme helps the CLA.

The CLA starts the New Year with new energy with the recent reorganisation, and a new President.  I hope you are invigorated for the New Year.  Good luck!"
