Deer Survey The British Deer Society (BDS), is a charity dedicated to the welfare of deer which records distribution of the six deer species living wild in the UK. Five years on from its last survey, the Society is keen to record the presence of each species within every ten kilometre square area of the UK land mass and has begun its latest survey to find out exactly where the UK's deer are living - and is urging people to get involved. The survey is straightforward and based on grid reference information. Additional records will be gathered from deer related road traffic accident reports and significant input will be provided by other conservation organisations too. Your participation can help provide the detailed information needed to find out species locations and identify change in movements and distribution trends. Of particular interest are deer found on the periphery of existing areas of colonisation and as Japanese Sika deer start to move northwards and muntjac become more widespread, this is relevant to parts of the South West. To take part go to the BDS website at www.bds.org.uk to download your free Deer Identification Pack, Observer Questionnaire and Deer Record Sheet or contact the BDS, Burgate Manor, Fordingbridge, Hants SP6 1EF Tel: 01425 655434 E-mail: h.q@bds.org.uk |
