Cranborne Chase Looking back over 30 years

This year marks the 30th anniversary of Cranborne Chase & West Wiltshire Downs AONB and the AONB Partnership is celebrating the achievements of the last three decades by asking people to let them know what you would like to see happen in the coming years.

Since designation in 1981, it was primarily Local Authority officers who had the responsibility to ensure the AONB was taken into consideration in any decisions made that would affect the area. Since 2004, the AONB team has also been beavering away at projects and initiatives that 'conserve and enhance the natural beauty of the area' on behalf of all AONB partners and, most importantly, local communities.

The Parish Archive Project produced amazing exhibitions such as the one created by Stourton and Gasper, a book published by Sixpenny Handley, while the Ansty community 'walked the parish bounds', after researching the old tradition. Fifty half day workshops have been held with local primary schools since 2009, whilst an amazing Parish Map has also been produced showing all 104 parishes – copies are available.

The small Local Action Fund has grant funded 36 projects totalling £21,000, whilst the Sustainable Development Fund has helped deliver 72 projects around the AONB through grants totalling over £250,000, levering in a further £2 million in match funding.

The Sowing SEEDS programme remains 'open for business' with over £500,000 available for innovative, collaborative business or social enterprise applications. The future of this AONB is in the hands of everyone who lives and works here, together with those who visit it. The work is guided by everyone with a responsibility for it and those with a stake in it - most importantly, local communities.

If you are interested in landscape, planning, wildlife or farming issues; your village shop, parish plan or the much valued historic environment or you would simply like to find out more about grants, the area or the wide ranging work of the AONB, contact them at the AONB Office, Castle Street, Cranborne, Dorset BH21 5PZ     Tel: 01725 517417
