Somerset Landowners Warned to be on the lookout for access letters

Somerset Landowners Warned to be on the lookout for access letters

Land managers along the Somerset coast have been warned to be on the lookout for a letter from Natural England - because it contains important details of the next stage of the Governments plan to implement access to the English coast under the Marine and Coastal Access Act.

The warning comes from CLA Regional Surveyor, Charlotte Sealy, who says that the second tranche of land in the South West to be brought in under The Act runs from Minehead to Brean Down – and the letter is an invitation to the  'walking the course' stage of the consultation.

"Walking the course is the single most important stage for landowners.  It is their opportunity to meet with Natural England, look at their proposals for access to the coast, and explain any issues they may have whether in relation to the proposed route or any spreading room. Natural England will physically walk the proposed route - or any alternative put forward - and plot it on a map.

"This is the land manager's chance to raise concerns and to make sure that Natural England is aware of any issues."

Letters have been sent out this week to the registered owners of land and people with stewardship agreements – but Miss Sealy is concerned that some people with an interest in land might have been left off the list.

"There may well be people with leasehold or sporting rights who have been missed - and they also need to have an input, to understand their role in the process and arrange dates for walking the course," she said.

Miss Sealy is advising anybody who has not received a letter within the next week – and who has an interest in land in the Minehead to Brean Down area – to email Natural England with their contact details at SomersetCoastalAccess@naturalengland.org.uk

People who are concerned about the proposals can contact the CLA regional office on 01249 700200 for help while CLA members are entitled a free guidance note produced by the Association's National Access Advisor, Sarah Slade, which has a specific section titled: 'Issues for Landowners to Consider Before "Walking the Course" which can also be obtained from the regional office of from  info.southwest@cla.org.uk .

"People may also wish to either have a professional adviser with them when Natural England walks the course - or to have consulted with one beforehand," said Miss Sealy.
