Rural Growth Networks

Rural Growth Networks

The government wishes to collaborate with Local Enterprise Partnerships and/or Local Authorities to identify mechanisms capable of stimulating faster and more widespread sustainable growth, employment and economic activity in rural areas.

To this end, Defra is launching a Rural Growth Network initiative supported by around £15m of new funding.

Around six pilot RGNs will be selected to develop and test different models designed to stimulate sustainable rural economic growth. LEPs or Local Authoritiess which are interested in submitting proposals are now invited to apply but the applications should be made no later than 31 January.

It is expected that each RGN will:

·         Consist of a number of relatively small 'enterprise hubs' on underused business parks or brownfield sites with outline planning permission for commercial or industrial development;

·         Provide essential infrastructure, premises and a simplified planning regime, where appropriate and relevant, to address specific barriers to growth;

·         Offer enhanced networking within and between hubs to facilitate knowledge transfer, access to mentoring, services and skills and enable businesses to capitalise on new opportunities;

·         Provide effective targeted support to women-led enterprises, where appropriate and relevant. This will not be a required element, but ring-fenced funding has been made available and all applications should demonstrate some consideration of how the needs of women-led enterprises will be identified and addressed during the development and operation of the pilot.
