Fly-spotters reach final three months of pilot schemeAn important volunteer project that aims to find out the true scale of fly-tipping on private farmland and woodland, as well as on public land, in 12 parishesą in East Hampshire moved into its final phase this quarter. The ground-breaking project is the first of its kind in the South-East. Established in May 2010 by a team from the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) Hampshire, the NFU, CLA, East Hampshire District Council and the Environment Agency, a report on its findings will be published in the summer. The project team hope to gather figures which will give evidence to lobby government for more support for farmers and private land-owners– who pay thousands of pounds each year to clear fly-tips. So far, results received from the trial, which uses a post-card report and an online reporting system, seem lower than expected. The project members wish to encourage everyone in the pilot area to report through this system, so that they can gain a true record of current rates. Tim Brock, CLA Assistant South East Regional Director, said: "Without adequate documented evidence, it is harder for us to lobby the authorities to take action. This action could be both prosecutions and addressing the root causes of the problem. It is up to all our members to report incidences whether on public or private land in order that this blight in our countryside be actively addressed. Tim continued: "The CLA represents 35,000 rural enterprises, landowners and farmers throughout England and Wales, many of them have been subjected to this major on-going problem. The CLA was instrumental in the establishment of The National Fly-Tipping Prevention Group (NFTPG) with the aim of coming up with solutions to the problem of fly-tipping." Becky French of CPRE Hampshire has written to her group of 70 "Fly-spotters" who volunteered to help with the project, saying: "We only have three months left of our pilot and we'd like to encourage everyone to report through our system. As you are out and about please remember to report any fly-tips, however small." For further details call Becky on 01962 779185 or visit www.easthants.gov.uk/stopthedrop. |
