Godinton launches renewable fuel heatingAshford MP Damian Green launched Godinton House's renewable wood fuel heating system at a ceremony in early July. The project was grant funded by SEEDA. Godinton House near Ashford, Kent, uses the estate's coppiced chestnut woodlands to supply the 350 kW boiler, which replaces six old boilers which were burning 80,000 litres of oil per year. The annual saving will be around £20,000 and carbon dioxide emissions will be reduced by 90 tonnes per year. 2.5 acres of chestnut coppice will be sufficient to fuel the boiler every year, and there is sufficient storage to make woodchip available for sale to other users. Meters record the amount of heat used by the estate's tenants, who can be billed accordingly. The tiny amount of ash produced by the boiler can be used as fertilizer. |
