Members wanted for new South Downs National Park AuthorityCLA members in Sussex and Hampshire are alerted to the fact that DEFRA is seeking applications from individuals to fill either eight or 10 vacancies on the new South Downs National Park Authority. DEFRA is currently consulting on the number of composition of the South Downs National Park Authority. The two options under consideration are: 15 Local Authority Members 8 "National" Appointees 6 Parish Council Members Or 19 Local Authority Members 10 "National" Appointees 8 Parish Council Members Applications are being sought for the "National" Appointee places. The closing date for applications is 6 October 2009. Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed either on 20/21 or 26/27 January 1010. The position of National Park Authority Member is an unpaid one. CLA members contemplating an application should be aware of DEFRA's guidance on the essential criteria for candidates: "Essential criteria (in order of importance) Candidates must clearly demonstrate that they meet all of the following criteria: 1. An understanding of England's National Parks as significant national assets, their statutory purposes and duties, together with an ability to make a reasoned judgement when conflicts arise. 2. A good knowledge and an appreciation of the strategic issues facing the National Park to which membership is being applied for. 3. An understanding of the role of a Secretary of State appointee to a NPA. 4. Proven ability to communicate effectively, and an understanding of how to be an effective committee member. 5. An awareness of social inclusion and diversity issues in relation to the National Parks. " DEFRA's guidance continues to qualify the candidates as follows "Successful candidates are UNLIKELY to:

Please note that whilst the advisers are able to advise on a wide range of subjects relating to land ownership, they cannot act in place of a member's own solicitor, accountant, surveyor and tax specialist by, for example, drafting documents or corresponding on their behalf and may be precluded, by the rules of their own professions, from advising one CLA member against another CLA member in the case of conflict.
Solicitors Indemnity Fund . Solicitors in the CLA Legal Team are not covered by the Solicitors Indemnity Fund in relation to professional negligence in relation to any advice given by them.
