CLA member's Next Generation Probiotic, Symprove, Offers New Hope for IBS Sufferers

A new probiotic with four strains of live probiotic bacteria in a unique, liquid-based delivery system promises to transform the lives of people suffering with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).  This news will come as a welcome relief to sufferers especially those who have spent much time and effort searching for an answer.

A new study of 186 patients with Rome III classified IBS, run by the prestigious Gastroenterology unit at King's College Hospital, London shows that the live probiotic drink - Symprove - has real potential to improve even the most severe IBS symptoms.

Led by King's College Consultant Gastroenterologist, Professor Ingvar Bjarnason, the study is planned for full publication in spring next year but the King's team is releasing the interim news now to allow patients with IBS to take advantage of Symprove.  The King's College clinical team considers that the data gathered from its double blind, investigator-led study using a masked comparator, shows a statistically significant improvement in IBS symptom severity with Symprove. The team considers the study more robust than most other probiotic studies in IBS, and involved a 3 month treatment period in IBS patients who had failed first and second line treatments and where symptoms were sufficiently severe for GP's to refer to the hospital.

The founders of Symprove the Surrey-based biotechnology company by the same name, are CLA members Barry and Ann Smith. They have worked in probiotic research and development for 25 years, moving the technology from its original farming roots through to today's breakthrough results. Over the years, there have been numerous hurdles to cross, especially for a small company. Their determination, backed up by expert advice and guidance drove them on to produce a science-based probiotic that could change the lives of millions. Barry is a firm believer in the importance of delivering live, fit, fast-acting defined probiotic bacteria to the place where they are needed - the small intestine and large bowel.

Barry explains, "Probiotics need to be delivered 'alive' and in good condition when they enter the alimentary canal in order to ensure efficacy and delivery to targeted areas in prescribed numbers. The bacteria in Symprove almost certainly start establishing and colonising the small bowel very quickly because they are activated from the moment Symprove is swallowed."

Probiotics must avoid being destroyed or weakened by stomach and bile acids and elude triggering digestion in the stomach. The unique Symprove delivery system achieves all this and has the added benefit of being lactose and gluten-free, a major plus for people with food intolerances."

Barry continues, "We are incredibly proud of what we have achieved with this probiotic formulation and more importantly, feel extremely encouraged with the ever-increasing feedback from customers who contact us to share their experiences."
