Surrey Hills LEADER funding

The Surrey Hills LEADER Programme has issued a rallying call to Surrey farmers and landowners to make use of The Surrey Hills LEADER Grant Scheme's £2 million budget to fund projects over the next five years. This money is available for the farming community but after an initial flurry of interest, real projects have been slow in materialising.

Compared with their colleagues over the border in Kent, Surrey farmers appear to be holding back and the danger is that they will lose out on this funding opportunity to move their businesses forward. Farmers in other counties in the south east are also being slow to come forward with projects. Without interest from farmers, the money could end up in village and community projects not specifically involving agriculture.

LEADER money can provide up to 50 percent of the cost of a project, to a maximum of £50,000 per grant, and farm development projects sit at the heart of its remit: its aim is to help the development of sustainable enterprises involving food, farming, woodland, community and tourism in the Surrey Hills LEADER area. All of these areas offer opportunities for farmers.

Projects can be small: for example a new trailer for a coppice business, or more ambitious, as LEADER offers a great opportunity for big co-operative projects such as meat processing and distribution.

Kent has already approved funding for three agriculture-based projects: the launch of Mitchell and Peach English Lavender products, the processing of coppice wood for fuel and development of Arena Gold apple juice. The 50 percent grants ranged from £35,000 to £8,000.

Details of the LEADER scheme can be found on the website: www.surreyhillsleaderbid.org.uk. Anyone interested in submitting a bid for a grant should begin by visiting the site and completing the expression of interest form.
