Giant hogweed control in Medway Valley

Non Native Invasive Species are a major threat to our native flora and fauna. They can also have a detrimental effect on our environment, our health and our economy and for these reasons the control of non native species is of great importance.

Medway Valley Countryside Partnership (MVCP) has been delivering the Giant Hogweed Control Programme for the last 10 years, resulting in significant reductions of the invasive plant along the river Medway in Kent.

The tributaries of the Medway, such as the Beult and Teise have also been included in the project in recent years and MVCP are focussing their efforts on these areas to try to reduce the invasive plants as much as possible.

The Giant Hogweed Control Programme (funded by the Environment Agency, Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council and Maidstone Borough Council) will continue to spray treat and control the Giant Hogweed in the Medway area in 2010, as in previous years.  If you live in the area you may therefore see the MVCP contractor working and MVCP staff surveying along the rivers throughout the spring and summer.

If you are a local riparian landowner who has received letters about the project, please do get back in touch with MVCP with your consent for treatment to take place on your land. If you own land but have not heard from MVCP, please do get in touch with them.

In 2010, additional funding has been given to the Medway Valley Countryside Partnership by Natural England for a Beult SSSI Non Native Species Project. In addition to Giant Hogweed, this project will address Himalayan Balsam and Japanese Knotweed on the Beult (and Tatt) and also the potential source, the Teise.

As part of this project, on the Tatt in Yalding a large amount of spray treatment will take place to reduce the Himalayan Balsam in the area. This species has a detrimental effect by out-competing native plants and could also clog up the watercourse.

If you live in the area, you may see the MVCP contractor spraying on the Tatt with follow up surveying by Andrea from MVCP every few weeks throughout spring and summer. Andrea from MVCP says 'Glyphosate is non hazardous to people, pets and wildlife so people should not worry about the treatment process, however we are aware that our ongoing work may temporarily interfere with people's enjoyment of the area but hopefully the treatment will reduce the Himalayan Balsam seed bank on the Tatt so future years will see the Tatt rich in native flora once more'.

If you would like more information about the non native species control programmes delivered by MVCP do not hesitate to contact Andrea at MVCP on 01622 683695 or by emailing medwayvalley@kent.gov.uk
