SEEDA reacts to September South East Farmer

An article in South East Farmer magazine has provoked a response from SEEDA, to correct alledged inaccuracies concerning Landskills South East, Livestock Health South East and Fresh Start.

SEEDA said:

"Landskills South East and Livestock Health South East are two extremely important training projects funded by the Rural Development Programme for England (RDPE).  Landskills SE is funded until August 2011. Livestock Health South East is funded until Autumn 2010 and discussions are already in hand about continuing it beyond that date.

"Full details of how to access training under both of these projects are available on the SEEDA website, www.seeda.co.uk/rdpe

"Elements of the Fresh Start academies are being funded under the Landskills South East project.  SEEDA is looking at funding some more elements of the academies under RDPE.

"Your article also includes more general inaccuracies about the purpose and scope of RDPE funding. I have briefly set out the facts below and more detail is available on our website.

  • Forestry contractors across the whole of the region are eligible for RDPE funding
  • The South East Woodland and Timber Fund (SEWTF) was designed as a stop-gap until the RDPE became fully operational and the funding will continue until March 2011. Most of the activity funded under the SEWTF is now eligible for funding under RDPE
  • Rural Tourism - RDPE funding can be used to support both existing rural tourism businesses and to support the development of new rural tourism
  • Farm Diversification applicants located in a Leader area and seeking a grant less than £50,000 can apply to their Leader local actions group.  All other applicants can apply directly to SEEDA
  • SEEDA's RDPE team has and continues to work with projects which aim to improve the supply chain for local and regional foods. This is one of SEEDA's key priorities.

"To ensure there is no confusion over SEEDA's future use of the Collison and Associates report, I can confirm it will be used to inform future rural policy.  We are already implementing many of its recommendations, for instance £3.5m was awarded to supply chain projects in the horticultural sector.  Many of these projects have featured extensively in recent editions of your magazine."
