LEADER needs rural members in Sussex Downs and Low WealdCLA members in the Sussex Downs and Low Weald are being urged by West Sussex County Counvil to join the LEADER Local Action Group to help determine funds distribution.
The Local Action Group oversees grants to help farming and forestry, rural businesses and local rural communities in the Sussex Downs and Low Weald area. It urgently needs more farmers, landowners and rural business people to assess grant applications and help spread the word about a great new grant scheme for farm diversification and rural regeneration.
The EU LEADER programme is funded from Single Farm Payment modulation: this is money taken from farmers' pockets which must go back into the rural economy (you may have seen the article in the Farmer's Weekly 12th December, page 32-3.) The local scheme has just been launched with £2.25 million to distribute over the next five years.
Most grant scheme are run by regional or national organisations, but not LEADER – LEADER funds are put into the hands of Local Action Groups which decide where the money goes.
One of the best things about LEADER is that more than 50 percent of the members of a Local Action Group must be drawn from the private sector directly involved in the local rural economy. But right now there are not enough representatives from the private sector.
At least eight more private sector rural members are needed. The group meets every couple of months at venues throughout the Sussex Downs and Low Weald, but much of the group's business is conducted by email. All are volunteers.
