CLA lays Sussex’s rural concerns at Defra’s doorHelen Ghosh, Defra Permanent Secretary, visited rural Sussex last week to get a feel for the issues faced by Sussex's rural economy. The visit was organised by Hamish Munro, CLA Sussex Committee member and chairman of the East Sussex Economic Partnership (ESEP). The tour was also joined by Ben Underwood, assistant South East regional director of the CLA; Jeremy Leggett, Chief Exec of AiRS (Action in Rural Sussex); Becky Shaw, Director of East Sussex County Council and Jude Badger, also from ESEP.
The meeting began at AiRS' headquarters in Lewes, where topics discussed included; Defra and Mainstreaming, Parish Councils and Community Anchors and Affordable Housing, Hailsham Market, agriculture and conservation. The party then visited CLA Sussex chairman Martin Hole's farm in Pevensey. Ben Underwood of the CLA had the chance to discuss Defra budget cuts, nitrate vulnerable zones (NVZs) and the effects on the livestock sector, and current difficulties with agri-environment schemes.
"Face-to-face meetings with Defra are vital for us at the CLA to lobby for the interests of the rural economy," said Underwood. "Helen Ghosh was receptive and seemed to understand our concerns. We need to maintain the pressure to ensure that words are followed by actions."
