Tiffin Club is proud to say “Just Ask” where our food comes fromTiffin Club in Southampton and its sister restaurant in Winchester on Friday November 9 became the first ethnic restaurants in the UK to join the CLA's Just Ask local food campaign. The Tiffin Club's Just Ask launch deliberately coincided with a similar event at the Brilliant Restaurant in Southall, West London, also an Indian restaurant, attended by their Royal Highnesses the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall. The aim of the Just Ask campaign, which was launched by the former Prime Minister Tony Blair at 10 Downing Street in January, is to encourage people visiting food outlets of all descriptions to "Just Ask" where the food they are buying came from.
This year, food businesses across the country, from pubs to national food distributors, have signed up to Just Ask, but today Tiffin Club led the drive for local sourcing in the ethnic food sector.
Waiters at Tiffin Club donned their "Just Ask" aprons to encourage patrons to enquire about the provenance of what was on their plate. Proprietor Abdul Kayum proudly displayed a table over-flowing with locally-sourced ingredients, which were then specially cooked for the event. "I grew up in Winchester where my Mum managed to cook wonderful Indian food using local ingredients. This has served as an inspiration Tiffin Club and is the basis of our philosophy here. We are delighted to support Just Ask and hope many more follow our lead."
Tiffin Club, a member of Hampshire Fare, has an admirable local sourcing policy. Suppliers, many of whom attended the launch, include Blackmoor Game, Broughton Water Buffalo, Rother Valley Organics (beef and lamb), M&J Seafood (Hampshire trout) and New Forest Barramundi (a freshwater fish). In addition, Tiffin Club is soon to start sourcing vegetables from Sunnyfields Organics. On the drinks side, suppliers include Wickham Vineyard and Hampshire Brewery.
CLA South East regional director, Rupert Ashby, said: "The influence of Tiffin Club's cuisine may be from another continent, but this has proved no hindrance to a truly local sourcing policy. More local sourcing of food is better for the environment, better for animal welfare and ensures that local farms and producers have a future. Businesses like Tiffin Club show that good food from all sorts of traditions can go hand in hand with a healthy, productive English countryside." |
