FARMERS BEGIN TO ASSESS AFFECT OF FLOODS "Many farmers are looking at exceptional hardship from the recent flooding as much, and in some cases all, of their land is underwater," said Rupert Ashby, South East Regional Director of the Country Land and Business Association (CLA). "In affected areas it could be worse than foot and mouth disease as in this situation there's no automatic right to compensation. The CLA's legal advisers have been looking at this issue and inform us that although the EU imposes significant limitations on when farmers can be compensated for the effects of natural disasters, it can be done in particularly serious cases as we've seen in other EU member states such as Italy.
"Many rural businesses will be affected by these floods but we know of some farmers who have lost all their crops including livestock feed for the winter which could have serious knock-on effects. We have had a steady stream of calls from members who have lost virtually everything. One farmer in the affected area has lost 200 acres of arable crops and many have told us of the extreme measures they've gone to to protect their livestock," concluded Rupert Ashby. |
