Hadlow College open evening indicates renewed interest in farming careers

Hadlow, one of the UK's elite land-based colleges, recently held an open evening with an opportunity to meet practising farmers from various sectors. Over a hundred people attended and many of them are signing up for Hadlow's fourth Fresh Start Academy. Aided by some sponsorship from Kent County Council, it will be run in tandem with the Laurence Gould Partnership.

Statistics concerning skill shortages and lack of new entrants into the agriculture and horticulture sectors are concerning governments around the world.  Two years' ago, Defra predicted requirement for 60,000 new entrants within ten years but, despite the current appalling unemployment register, there appears to be a reluctance to explore the career options offered within the farming sector.

Some of the malaise undoubtedly relates to the poor profile farming suffered during the lean years which is proving slow to reverse, despite notable signs of revival. There are, however, glimmers that perceptions might be changing.

Hadlow's Mark Lumsdon-Taylor comments 'With global population predicted to increase by 50% in less than forty years, it is apparent that farming and food will top all political agendas.  The farming sector and the associated support industries are going to need motivated, committed, bright and career-focused entrants.  I hope our latest Fresh Start programme will produce some of them'.

Hadlow has an excellent record of success with Fresh Start.  All those who graduated from the first programme are currently employed in the farming sector.  Two other programmes are currently up and running and most of those involved intend entering farming or one of the support services.

Anyone interested in enrolling (entirely free) on the latest Fresh Start programme should contact Douglas Jackson (01444 232822) or Pat Crawford  (07771 635684).
