Safe evacuation from fire ensured for horsesSparsholt College Hampshire in association with Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service and Rural Safety Signs are proud to announce that they have worked in conjunction to put an efficient and effective evacuation procedure in place for all equines resident at the college Equine Centre.
Sarah Houstoun from Rural Safety Signs was given the opportunity to work closely with Jim Green and Anton Philips, Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service Rural Safety and Animal Rescue Specialists, to design and produce a 'Fire and Emergency Information Box', which contains a folder with templates for the business operator to fill in to supply the information needed in an emergency, specific to their business premises; it also has a Master Key system for their local Fire and Rescue Service.
This box has now been completed and put in place with mock evacuations organised. These evacuations serve as realistic training for Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service and prepare Equine Staff to deal with the often catastrophic consequences of an agricultural fire. Regular fire evacuation drills involving firefighters will help to desensitise horses to the fire personnel which makes moving them easier and therefore quicker and safer to evacuate. Students at the college are given training each year by Hampshire's Rural Fire Safety specialists which provides practical advice in managing and running a yard to prevent fire occurring but also what to do in the event of an emergency and how best to assist the emergency services. Sparsholt college equine staff also reciprocates with horse handling training for Hampshire Fire and Rescues Animal Rescue Team and working together will greatly increase the viability of horses in the event of fire and ensure that human lives are also safeguarded. All businesses must have a fire risk assessment in order to comply with Fire Safety legislation.
