Project SOE Biocides and Pesticides Amnesty

A new project, Security in the Operational Environment, is launching a Biocides and Pesticides Amnesty from 3 January to 14 March 2011. The amnesty will make it possible for members to dispose of any unwanted, out of date or revoked biocides and pesticides, for a one off cost of £20.00.

Project SOE  is an initiative which focuses on security issues within the agricultural environment. In order for a farm or similar business to operate in an effective manner, it is critical that machinery, pesticides and those biocides needed to control pests that threaten to contaminate our food are kept in a safe and secure way. Product storage security is essential for the protection of the public, users , wildlife and the environment and the wider industry.

Project SOE is seeking the views of the farming community on the types of security threats you face and any examples of good practice that you may wish to share. On the website, www.projectsoe.org, you will find a 'Farm Security Issues' page where you can leave comments or share good practice. This may be to do with the security of machinery, fuel stocks or other items essential for farming, such as biocides and pesticides. Please visit the Project SOE website to share your views. In return, Project SOE will publish examples of good practice and offer security advice to those who want it. This will be available on the website from February 2011, but if you need advice sooner than that, please see their 'Links' page.

Please see the 'Project SOE Rules' page for more information about the amnesty. All you need to do is register on the Project SOE website, complete the application form and arrangements will be made for your chemicals to be collected and disposed of for a one off cost of £20.00. The amnesty has limited funds and will be conducted on a 'first come, first served' basis. Register now at www.projectsoe.org

"This is a good opportunity for farmers, game keepers and pest controllers to safely and legally dispose of unwanted, toxic pesticides that are no longer approved for storage and use. We anticipate that following the amnesty, breaches of the regulations are likely to be met by more rigorous enforcement action" Paul Butt, Natural England
