Carbon calculator to be launched at Oxford Farming Conference

A web-based calculator which will help farmers and land managers work out their carbon account is to be unveiled at next month's Oxford Farming Conference.

The calculator is the result of a project led by the CLA, the rural economy experts, working closely with Savills and supported by the East of England Development Agency, and the Crown Estates.

It is the first on-line, business-based calculator which shows the balance between annual emissions and carbon sequestration of the key greenhouse gases associated with the activities of the land sector.

The Secretary of State for the Environment, The Rt. Hon. Hilary Benn MP, has agreed to launch the calculator at a Fringe Meeting of the Conference.

CLA president, Henry Aubrey-Fletcher, will chair the meeting which will be held in the Examination Schools in Oxford High Street on Thursday January 3rd when experts from the CLA and Savills will explain how the calculator works.

"Understanding the carbon account of a business is a vital first step in thinking about climate change.  Until the land manger knows the scale and source of his emissions he cannot constructively think about ways to reduce them and the extent to which he can offset them through carbon sequestration." said Aubrey-Fletcher.    Farming and forestry are in the front line of climate change, they depend critically on the climate for the production of their outputs while agriculture, land use change and forestry generate about 7% of UK greenhouse gas emissions.

"This calculator offers a freely available, on-line, business-based approach for farms and estates and it is quite distinct from carbon footprint calculators devised for specific products. It follows the most widely used, internationally agreed, accounting guidelines for government and businesses to understand, quantify and manage GHG emissions," he said.
