Kent farmer's open invitation backs Campaign for the Farmed Environment

Church Farm in Ulcombe near Maidstone opened its gates to fellow farmers last week to show how to protect farmland birds, farm wildlife and natural resources.

This was one of three 'beacon farm' events which ran across the South East between May 20 and June 1, 2010, aimed at encouraging farmers to back The Campaign for the Farmed Environment (www.cfeonline.org.uk).

At Church Farm, host farmer Charles Tassell, who is Kent NFU chairman and a CLA member, demonstrated good practice during a guided farm walk, aided by Charlie Chantler of Natural England. The tour focused on plans at Church Farm to boost its already abundant wildlife.

Such measures include the establishment of beetle banks in fields (beetles are nature's pest controllers), uncultivated buffer strips around watercourses to minimize run off of fertilisers into streams, the use of dedicated areas for plants producing seeds for wild birds, the leaving of uncultivated margins around fields and overwinter stubbles, which encourage and nurture wildlife in a variety of ways.

Some 45 Kentish farmers, land agents and agronomists attended the event, which finished with a locally produced "pie and pint" for all.

The Campaign sees industry bodies including the NFU and CLA (Country Land and Business Association), working in a partnership with Defra and its agencies, Natural England and the Environment Agency, alongside conservation organisations such as the Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust, RSPB and local Wildlife Trusts.

Kent coordinator of the Campaign for the Farmed Environment, Frances Clayton, said: "We were delighted with the turnout, and the fact it was raining meant this particular audience was happy. The campaign has generated considerable interest since its launch earlier this year, and we believe Kent's countryside will benefit appreciably."

County chairman of the campaign, Kent farmer Doug Wanstall, said: "Many farmers in Kent are already engaged in a wide variety of activities to encourage wildlife, but the Campaign for the Farmed Environment aims to raise the benchmark, so that all farmers are actively conserving wildlife and developing habitats."
