Environmental Stewardship – why the resistance?

Natural England has expressed concern to the CLA about resistance among members to Environmental Stewardship schemes. Members are therefore urged to complete the attached questionnaire about attitudes to Environmental Stewardship, which should be returned by July 14. Questions are targeted both at those who participate in schemes and those who do not. The questionnaire is at the end of this article.

During a recent meeting with Natural England regional director Allan Law, to discuss a range of pressing issues, the CLA was quick to point out many of the concerns surrounding the schemes, not least the understandable perception of a lack of funds; rising opportunity costs of land; the requirement to have a SSSI for a successful application; and the fear that further controls may be placed on land once it expires from an agreement.

The money supporting these schemes is predominantly from modulated funds from the single payment scheme, and as a result the CLA continues to lobby to ensure the schemes are accessible to as many landowners and managers as possible.

The CLA strongly urges members to respond to as many questions as possible.
