Farmyard classrooms get a new champion

A project that aims to establish more Young Farmers Clubs and farms in schools has been launched by the South East of England's new Young Farmers Champion.

Sarah Archibald, 27 years old, is the vice chairman of Hampshire Young Farmers' Clubs and recently took over the position of South East Young Farmer Champion from Stephen Paine. She was appointed to the role by the South East's Sustainable Food and Farming Strategy Board and has been given funding by the South East England Development Agency to promote farming to young people.

"School-based Young Farmers' Clubs have a vital role in creating interest in farming, food production and the countryside," says Sarah.

"Young Farmers Clubs need to attract young people from wider urban and rural social and ethnic backgrounds and setting up school clubs and farms is an ideal way of doing this."

The project will build upon work already carried out by Stephen Paine who worked to get farmers more involved with Young Farmers Clubs.

Sarah says the project will consist of gathering best practice information on how to set up school-based Young Farmer Clubs. Guidance material based on that information will then be produced and offered to schools and Young Farmers Clubs.

She will also work with the national federation of Young Farmers Club to help club members understand the potential of farm-based clubs and with other organisations such as FACE (Farming And Countryside Education) who promote stronger links between young people and the farming industry. This will include two other South East farming champions – Ian Beecher Jones and John Bishop. Ian is the South East's Tractors in Schools Champion who uses tractors as a teaching aid for both primary and secondary school children. Berkshire farm manager John is the Farm Visitor Champion. He welcomes more than 9,000 schoolchildren and dozens of adult groups to his farm every year and he now advises other farms on how to run farm visits.

"There is a great appetite for greater knowledge of farming and countryside," says Sarah.

"Young Farmers Clubs and school farms can play a great role in satisfying that appetite, while also getting children interested in farming as a career."

Sarah is looking for information, ideas or guidance on her project. She can be contacted on 07919 255268 or via email on sezzaa@hotmail.com

What is a farming champion?

The South East of England is the only English region to have a network of farming champions who have been appointed by the region's Sustainable Food and Farming Strategy Board. The South East England Development Agency awards £20,000 to dynamic and innovative farmers and other rural business people to study and promote their part of the rural industry within and beyond the South East. Champions include an ornamental champion, a top fruit climate mitigation champion, an equine champion, an animal health champion, bioenergy champions, a precision farming champion and rural education champions.
