CLA examines effects in South East of HS2 rail linkFollowing the Government's acceptance of Route 3 in December for the High Speed 2 (HS2) London to Birmingham rail link, the CLA in the South East region has been examining its possible effects on members in Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire. We will continue to assist the national team in recommending a series mitigation measures further to those already announced in December. Our aim is to reduce the project's impact overall and lobby for a fair treatment and proper compensation during the compulsory purchase phase. We will also be arguing for a robust system to counter blight caused by this scheme. The Government has also announced that a public consultation will start in February and will last for five months. The CLA intends to make representations during this process. The recent announcement includes the following mitigation measures: from Old Amersham to Little Missenden, a 150 m green bridge over the cutting will reduce the route's visual impact and avoid severing a public right of way; from South Heath to Wendover, the proposed alignment has been lowered by around 5 m, and a 900 m green tunnel incorporated as the line passes South Heath, to reduce the visual and noise impacts on the village, and to avoid severing existing roads; and the alignment has been moved further from Hartwell House Hotel near Aylesbury, so that the line would not be visible from the house, and additional earthworks and planting have been incorporated to reduce the line's visual and noise impacts. We welcome these changes and we will be encouraging HS2 to include further works of this type to mitigate effects in other parts of the line in our region.
