Introducing the Arun & Rother Connections (ARC) project proposal

A new project is being proposed in the Arun and Rother valleys in West Sussex, to work with landowners and communities to find solutions to the impacts of climate change and river level rise, increased flooding events, poor water quality, invasive species such as giant hogweed, and fragmented wildlife habitats.

Called Arun & Rother Connections (ARC) the project will depend on landowner engagement and support for its success. Consultation with landowners and the local community will be at the heart of the project as it seeks to discover what people want from their river valleys.

ARC is a broad partnership including the South Downs National Park Authority, West Sussex County Council, wildlife charities, Government agencies and the newly formed Arun & Rother Rivers Trust. The partnership is hoping to submit a bid for funding to the Heritage Lottery Fund in the autumn.

Sir Sebastian Anstruther, a landowner and farmer who is leading the Arun & Rother Rivers Trust, said "The ARC project is set to make a real difference to our rivers. The team's commitment to working closely with the farming and land management community from the outset is particularly welcome and bodes well for the future, and the Rivers Trust looks forward to working closely with ARC in the future."
