CLA donation helps Oast Trust for growing seasonThe CLA Charitable Trust has made a £1,500 donation to the Canterbury Oast Trust in Woodchurch, Kent, to buy materials to help train people with learning disabilities. Canterbury Oast Trust is an independent charity providing homes, care and personal development for adults with learning and physical disabilities in Kent and East Sussex. It also owns and operates the Rare Breeds Centre, a popular visitor attraction and environmental education centre which provides much of the work and training opportunities for the people in their care. Part of the Rare Breeds Centre is the Rainbow Nursery, a thriving horticulture project where the charity's staff and volunteers instruct and support people with learning disabilities in a wide range of horticultural activities - which can lead to a recognised qualification through the City and Guilds National Proficiency Test Council. The Nursery occupies two acres, with five plant and vegetable growing beds, including raised beds for wheelchair users, and two polytunnels. The CLA Charitable Trust is a fund operating in England and Wales to provide facilities for the disabled and disadvantaged to take part in recreation and education in the countryside. The Fund is supported by the CLA, the rural economy experts. The CLA's South East regional director Rupert Ashby said: "The Canterbury Oast Trust allows those with learning disabilities to benefit from the countryside while at the same time making a valuable contribution to the rural economy. It is just the sort of constructive scheme which our Trust is keen to support." Angela Phipps, a fundraiser at the Canterbury Oast Trust, said: "This donation was a tremendous boost to the project and funded the purchase of all of its seeds and plug plants for the 2008 growing season. The people who attend the nursery have a wide range of disabilities – some with very complex needs. Everyone, however, is fully involved and the nursery staff are very experienced in ensuring activities are tailored to suit the abilities of each person - for example, the plug plants they have been able to buy are especially suited to people who lack coordination and physical dexterity as they are easier to handle." With the support of other donors, the nursery was invited to exhibit at the Hampton Court Flower Show last summer of 2007. "It was a wonderful opportunity for us to demonstrate the talents of the students and highlight the work of the Trust," said Mrs Phipps. As a registered charity, Canterbury Oast Trust runs enterprises such as the Rare Breeds Centre and sells things they grow and make. However, they still rely heavily on donations to continue their valuable work.
